Spring ATV & UTV Maintenance Checklist (Utah): What to Check Before Your First Ride

Spring ATV & UTV Maintenance Checklist (Utah): What to Check Before Your First Ride

Utah spring riding is the best… and it’s also when we see the most preventable breakdowns roll into the shop. Snowmelt, mud, water crossings, and big temperature swings are hard on fluids, belts, bearings, and electrical.
If you want a smooth first ride (and fewer “we should’ve checked that” moments), run through this spring ATV/UTV checklist before you load up.
Quick spring prep checklist (do this before the first ride)
  1. Change the oil (and don’t forget the filter)
  • Check oil level and color
  • Replace oil and filter
  • Look for leaks around the drain plug and filter
  1. Check differential and transfer case fluids
  • Inspect front and rear diff fluid
  • Check for milky fluid (water contamination)
  • Top off or replace if it’s dark, burnt, or unknown age
  1. Inspect the drive belt (UTV/SXS)
  • Inspect for cracks/glazing
  • Clean out belt dust
  • Make sure the clutches aren’t packed with debris
  1. Brakes: pads, rotors, and fluid
  • Check pad thickness
  • Look for grooved rotors
  • Test lever/pedal feel
  • Inspect brake fluid level and color
  1. Tires: pressure, tread, and sidewalls
  • Set pressure to spec (not “looks good”)
  • Inspect for plugs, cuts, and sidewall cracking
  • Check bead area for leaks
  1. Battery and charging system
  • Load test the battery (not just voltage)
  • Clean and tighten terminals
  • Confirm charging voltage while running
  1. Coolant and overheating prevention
  • Check coolant level and condition
  • Inspect hoses for swelling/cracks
  • Clean radiator fins and screens
  • Confirm fan operation
  1. Air filter and intake
  • Clean or replace the air filter
  • Inspect the airbox seal
  • Make sure clamps are tight and boots aren’t cracked
  1. Bearings, bushings, and steering play
  • Check each wheel for play
  • Inspect ball joints and tie rods
  • Look for torn CV boots and grease sling
  1. Lights, winch, and recovery gear
  • Test headlights/taillights/brake lights
  • Spool the winch in/out under light load
  • Check the winch line for frays
  • Confirm you have a strap, shackles, and basic tools
What we see most after winter storage (and how to avoid it)
  • No-starts: weak batteries, dirty terminals, stale fuel
  • Overheating: clogged radiators, stuck fans, low coolant
  • Belt failures (UTV/SXS): worn belts, dirty clutches, water intrusion
  • Brake issues: worn pads, contaminated fluid, seized calipers
